M D Smith was born and raised in Philadelphia and was a veteran session and live musician before embarking on a solo career. His work as a keyboard, piano and organ player appears on music that spans the gamut of styles from Philly soul to Rock to Classical.  

Living in one of the poorest areas of the Northeast, M D Smith developed a strong bond with the heart and soul of Philadelphia's most poor and marginalized communities, spending nearly his entire adult life living in Center City or South Philadelphia.  This perspective has guided his songwriting and advocacy, speaking out through social media and in interviews on such topics such as voting rights, social and economic injustice as well as women's and LGBTQ+ rights.  

Political advocacy and using his voice, musical and otherwise, to advance progress and equal justice, has always been front of mind in M D Smith's musical and other writings. 

Today in 2025, M D Smith releases new tracks about every 6-8 weeks and continues work on songwriting, political advocacy and occasionally wrestles a bulldog.
