I wrote a new song, quite spontaneously, just last week.  It's one of those rare songs that comes gushing out all in one frenetic bout of writing, recording and producing.  But it's also one of those songs that I have a definite love/hate relationship with.  Most songwriters have a certain identity that THEY try to imbue their writing with and then another that reflects how OTHERS view and hear their writing.  I write most of the songs I've done with the specific intent of avoiding the cliched, the mundane…the banal.  I don't generally write love songs - at least not the type that is common in most pop music.  If I write a love song, it's Romeo and Juliet or even Harold and Maude as opposed to pining anthems of youthful longing.  I write from the perspective of the broken - the lonely, the forever lost in love's dark aftermath.  But ‘I Alone’ is something wistful…harmless and light-hearted and for that, I hate it.

But in a way, it is because I hate its banality…it's commonplace theme of regret and redemption, that I persist in it.  It is a torturous act of self-immolation to force myself through this process of seeing love as possible, as real, as redemptive.  That makes it both the best and worst kind of song I'm capable of and since I also think it's just a good pop song in the conventional sense, I will endure its endearing platitudes and gentle longing until it is done…

or until it breaks me.
