‘Maybe I just want to fly….’

I wrote a song a year ago with a working title of ‘Strand’ that was originally about how we are each a ‘strand’ in the tapestry of each other's lives…or something similarly pretentious and dumb.  But as the song developed, I realized - that message isn't what I wanted to say at all…because it was dumb.  But ‘Strand’, if it can be called a love song at all, eventually led me to think about what would happen to those around me, those I loved, if I were gone.  How would they move on if somehow I were to exit this stage early?  How important was I, really?  I imagined being a ghost, haunting the home I live in now and following my love around all day, wanting to remain with her and yet wanting to let her move on and find happiness without me.  It led me to the conclusion that, in a way, we ultimately give permission to people to let us go while ALIVE, or we never do.  As a ghost, haunting her footsteps would be an act not of love, but of jealousy and possession and so THAT is the message of the song that ‘Strand’ became - now finally titled ‘Sparrow’.  

It says that we don't bind ourselves to people forever…but instead bind ourselves to the world and the cosmos  around them and in hope and love, we share existence and all experiences with them. I will miss and love her from within the trees, from the bottom of the ocean, from the beating wings of a sparrow in flight and it is in that thought that I hope she finds me again…and that I find her.
